First rides for little riders

From an 18 month old's first push to a six year old's first big wheel scooter. Six of them, youngest first.

Go on age, for once

This is the one range where age really is the answer.

Everywhere else on our site we tell you to measure something. Here, what matters is what a child can physically do: hold themselves up, steer, and stop. That changes fast between one and six, and in a fairly predictable order.

What to expect

Three stages

18 months to 3: they push

Swizzle Balance Bike. No pedals, feet on the ground, one thing to learn at a time.

3 to 5: they lean to steer

Zipper · Zinger. Three wheels. They lean the bar the way they want to go, no twisting.

5 and up: bigger rides

Rush 125, the first two-wheeler. The Raptor Dino Glide, three wheels and a big front tyre, for ages 6+.

Then check the weight

Age tells you when they can start. Weight tells you how long it lasts.

The Zipper and the Zinger both say 3 and up. One carries 20kg and the other 50kg. An average six year old is already around 21kg, so the Zipper is finished at about five or six, while the Zinger has years left in it. The Zipper’s bar is a fixed height too, where the Zinger’s adjusts from 50cm to 70cm.

  • Up to 20kg: Swizzle Balance Bike, Zipper. Real toddler rides, and they will be outgrown
  • Up to 50kg: the Zinger. Lasts into primary school
  • Up to 65kg: the Raptor Dino Glide, for ages 6+
  • 100kg: the Rush 125, but that is how strong it is, not who it is for

If they are already four or five, skip the Zipper and go to the Zinger.

ZipperComes with a helmet

Ages 3+ · up to 20kg · fixed bar

Zipper

The classic first scooter, and the only one here with a helmet in the box. Lean to steer: they lean the bar the way they want to go rather than twisting it. A low, wide deck means they reach the ground easily and have somewhere solid to stand. Ready in under a minute.

  • Three wheels, lean to steer
  • Fixed height bar
  • Bar clicks off the deck for storage or the boot
  • Low, wide deck
  • Helmet included, dial fit, XS/S
  • One step assembly
Check the weight and the bar before you buy this one. At 20kg, with a fixed bar, it suits a three or four year old and is finished by about five or six. If they are already four, the Zinger carries 50kg and its bar adjusts.

ZingerThe one that lasts

Ages 3+ · up to 50kg · bar 50–70cm

Zinger

Same idea as the Zipper, and it lasts years longer. The Zipper carries 20kg and the Zinger carries 50kg. Its bar adjusts from 50cm to 70cm from the foot plate, with a twist lock so it cannot slip down mid ride. Lean to steer, the same as the Zipper.

  • Three wheels, lean to steer
  • Light-up 120mm wheels
  • Bar 50–70cm, twist lock
  • Bar removes for storage
  • 12.5cm wide deck
  • Grind grips off the pro scooters

Rush 125The first two-wheeler

Ages 5 to 7 · a cruiser · folds

Rush 125

The step up, and the one that needs real balance. Two wheels rather than three, a folding frame and a bar that grows with them.

It carries 100kg, but that is how strong it is, not who it suits. The Rush 125 is a cruiser for roughly 5 to 7 year olds, for getting around the neighbourhood. It is not a skatepark scooter.

  • Two wheels, turn the bar to steer
  • 125mm light-up wheels, motion activated
  • Height adjustable bar
  • Easy-lock folding
  • Carbon steel frame · ABEC-5 bearings

Moving up

Is your child ready for two wheels?

There is no exact age. Most children are ready somewhere between four and seven, and readiness matters more than a birthday. Signs they may be ready:

  • They have mastered balance on their current scooter
  • They confidently ride a balance bike or a bicycle
  • They want faster or more challenging rides
  • They are at least 107cm tall
  • They are asking for a “big kid scooter”

Two things change at once.

Balance: a two-wheeler needs it, a three-wheeler does not.
Steering: three wheels you lean. Two wheels you twist, like a bike.

If a new two-wheeler looks like a struggle, it is usually the steering. Start somewhere smooth and flat, let them take their time, and ride with them.

The Rush 125 is a cruiser, not a park scooter. Once they want jumps and the skate park, that is what our pro scooters are built for.

Questions we get asked

The things people ask before they buy

Which one for my child's age?

18 months to 4 years: the Swizzle Balance Bike. 3 and up: the Zipper or the Zinger. 5 to 7: the Rush 125, the first two-wheeler. 6 and up: the Raptor Dino Glide. Then check the weight, because two scooters that both say 3+ can carry very different riders.

How do three-wheel scooters steer?

They lean to steer. The child leans the bar the way they want the wheels to roll, rather than twisting it like a two-wheel scooter. It feels natural to a small child, because leaning is what their body wants to do anyway.

Do they need a helmet?

At any age, yes, and it needs to actually fit. The Zipper comes with one in the box, dial fit so it adjusts as they grow. For everything else we sell helmets sized for the same riders.

Can they take the Rush 125 to the skate park?

No. The Rush 125 is a cruiser for getting around the neighbourhood, not built for jumps or tricks. When they are ready for the park, our pro scooters are the ones built for it.

Is the Swizzle Scooter Board a scooter?

Not the footpath kind. It is an indoor play board with no bar: four caster wheels roll in every direction, and they come off for storage. It is made for homes, classrooms and play spaces. Activity cards and shapes in the box give them challenges to do on it.

Is there a warranty?

Two years, and you deal with us here in Auckland rather than an offshore call centre.

Do they fold?

Only the Rush 125 folds. The Zipper’s bar clicks off the deck and the Zinger’s bar removes, so both pack down small for storage or the car boot. The Swizzle Scooter Board’s wheels come off. The Swizzle Balance Bike and the Raptor Dino Glide do not fold.
